Consumer Alert

Sweepstakes winners are NOT required to pay any money before receiving their prize. If you have been called or have been mailed notification that you have won a sweepstakes or other type of promotion and need to send money before receiving your prize you are most likely being scammed.

Over the past few years, NSC has advised consumers not to fall prey to these frauds. Unfortunately, these individuals are now using our name and logo in order to appear legitimate.  These sweepstakes are NOT legitimate and are in no way associated with NSC.

If you have been notified that you have won a sweepstakes or other type of promotion and are asked for money please contact your State Attorney General, or you can file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission.

Registration for your skill based contest

Feb 17, 2017

We spend a lot of time talking about sweepstakes and the various laws surrounding them - probably because they carry a lot more regulations than contests of skill (we’re talking to you free method of entry!).

In light of that, we wanted to share a specific requirement that exists for contests that you might not be aware of (but should be).

Contests of skill usually don’t require bonding or registration (unlike games of chance, who do require it when certain factors are met and the promotion is open and advertised in New York, Florida or Rhode Island).

But, if you are running a contest that is open and advertised in the state of Arizona, and you are requiring an entry fee to participate, you’re going to have to register the promotion in Arizona.

In order to register your contest in Arizona, you’ll need the following:

  • Full Official Rules, which are to be submitted at time of registration
  • Completed registration forms and fee
  • Arizona Representation (if you don’t have an office in Arizona, you’ll need to have this in place at time of registration)

Arizona contest registrations are required to be submitted prior to the promotion start date.

We handle Arizona registrations just as we handle registrations and bonds for sweepstakesLet us know if you’d like us to help out and we’ll complete and submit the appropriate paperwork, ensure the rules are compliant and final prior to submission, and if needed, arrange representation for you in Arizona as required.

Enjoy your weekend!
