Consumer Alert

Sweepstakes winners are NOT required to pay any money before receiving their prize. If you have been called or have been mailed notification that you have won a sweepstakes or other type of promotion and need to send money before receiving your prize you are most likely being scammed.

Over the past few years, NSC has advised consumers not to fall prey to these frauds. Unfortunately, these individuals are now using our name and logo in order to appear legitimate.  These sweepstakes are NOT legitimate and are in no way associated with NSC.

If you have been notified that you have won a sweepstakes or other type of promotion and are asked for money please contact your State Attorney General, or you can file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission.

Sweepstakes Hobbiests? Yes, it's a Real Thing.

Promotion Tips

If you’ve been running sweepstakes for years, you’ve probably become familiar with the people who enter your promotions (all of them) all the time.   You see their names pop up multiple times in your entrant files (they always maximize the total number of entries they can) and you’ve maybe even awarded them a prize, or more!

And, while some of our clients want nothing to do with the “Sweepers” or “Sweeps Hobbiests”, some of them find a great value in their participation!

A sweepstakes hobbiest is a person who enters multiple sweepstakes and contests per day.  They often know all of the rules and legalities surrounding sweepstakes and contest law and often win…a lot.

Some do it for fun, but most true Sweepers turn it into a full-time job.  The Contest Queen, Cheryl Wilman turned entering sweepstakes into a full-time career, entering 100-300+ sweepstakes per day!  Over the past 10+ years, she’s won $250k or so in  cash & prizes.  And, she wrote a book about it.  If you're interested in learning more, you can visit this post.

Unfortunately you can’t keep them from participating or winning unless they fail to meet the eligibility requirements or tamper with the entry process in some way.  But, some Sponsors ask us to incorporate language in the rules that states that if a winner has won a prize in promotion offered by the sponsor within 30 days or less, they are not eligible to participate or win a prize in that particular sweepstakes.  Perfectly okay to include this. But, you might not want to!

Since sweepers know the rules and want to get as many entries as possible, they are more likely to share it with their friends, which in turn helps your promotion go viral.  The more exposure, the more likely you are to gain new, authentic followers and brand loyal customers.

Need to ensure your promotion is running smoothly?  Don’t worry.  The sweepers will let you know if there is a technical issue or if something isn’t working properly. Free techs out in the field?  Seems like a pretty sweet deal to us!

And, one of the best parts is there willingness to share their winnings with their friends, family and their networks (yup, they’ve got networks of hobbiests they communicate with on the regular and hobbiests are consumers too). So, you’ll benefit from their continued (free) advertising of your brand.

Let us know when you’re ready to run your next sweepstakes!  In addition to administering the promotion for you, we can send you a list of hobby sites to list your promotion if you’re looking to tap into the sweeper audience and reap the rewards.
